The American Road, LHI Awardees debut at NCSS

The National Council for Social Studies was a founding partner of The American Road and remains a partner to this day.  It is for this reason that we are especially proud of the presentations and work of the six awardees of the Library’ of Congress first awards through the Lewis-Houghton Civics and Democracy Initiative.

At its 2024 Conference in Boston, we proudly co-presented poster sessions as part of the LoC/LHI cohort.  These include::

From Harikatha to Hip-Hop: Integrating Library of Congress Primary Sources on Traditional Music and Dance into the Humanities Curricula integrates primary sources to explore culturally-rooted music and dance traditions from around the world into instruction.

TIME OUT OF JOINT: Fostering Civic Engagement, Creative Expression, and Empowering Students’ Voices uses primary sources from the Library to engage students in historical understanding of Shakespeare, theater, society and issues about race and incarceration.

The Library of Congress Mixtape is an analytical and creative tool that help students understand the structure and content behind musical works in the Library.

Rock and Soul Forever Foundation, New York City  (aka Teach Rock) 
The Rock and Soul of America: U.S. History Course Using Music as a Primary Source to discover a “people’s history” of the United States while identifying the historical events, people and documents required by national and state social studies standards.

The Music of Us is a cloud-based platform and tool that will enable inquiry-based exploration of music and sound primary sources — providing ways for students to explore the musicians, history, social context and styles of pieces of music.

The American Road Education Collaborative | Tapestry Project is an extensive, music driven, digitally-delivered history, civics and civic engagement curriculum using historically important American songs in original and contemporary juxtaposition to tell the sort of America’s modern history in the voices of every generation and this generation of youth in America.
